There are seven levels to the YMCA Progressive Swim Program. Each level provides new and challenging skills to achieve.

To ensure your child is registered for the proper class, refer to the class descriptions or call Tom Saari, Aquatic Director.

Each child does not advance at the same rate. It is not uncommon for children to participate in some levels more than once.

The YMCA Progressive Swim Program is set up to teach all aquatic skills from safety too competitive and fitness swimming.

We are striving for consistency and quality instruction, so if you have any questions or comments on the Progressive Swim Program please call Amy McCann, Aquatic Director, at 775-2586.

POLLYWOG

For those children with little or no previous aquatic experience. Purpose is to acquaint the child with basic water adjustment skills, elementary backstroke, basic front crawl and water safety skills.

GUPPY

Participants must have mastered Pollywog class skill. Purpose of this class is to further challenge the student's ability to swim the front crawl with rotary breathing in good form. Backstroke skills are also introduced.

MINNOW

Participants must have mastered Guppy class skills. Purpose for this class is to increase endurance on the front crawl and learn the back crawl. Minnow is the first class that spends nearly all of the class time in the deep end of the swimming pool. Participants who pass this class are proficient in the front and back crawl as well as comfortable in deeper water.

FISH

Participants must have mastered Minnow class skills. Purpose for this class is to increase proficiency and endurance for the front crawl, back crawl, and to be introduced to the sidestroke. The Fish class is designed to greatly increase each participant's endurance in the basic swimming skills and strokes.

FLYING FISH

Participants must have mastered Fish class skills. The purpose for this class is to increase endurance in the three basic swimming strokes. Participants are introduced to more advanced safety skills and are taught the butterfly and breaststroke. Flying Fish class is the start of competitive and fitness swimming skills. Participants passing the Flying Fish level have the basic knowledge of the five major swimming strokes.

SHARK

Participants must have mastered Flying Fish class skills. The purpose of this class is to increase proficiency and endurance in five basic strokes. The participants are introduced to basic lifesaving and competitive swimming skills. Participants passing the Shark level are proficient in all major swimming strokes.

DOLPHIN

This is an ongoing class. The sky is the limit to what will be taught in Dolphin. Each session will be different and rewarding. Dolphin is competitive based with a strong emphasis on lifetime fitness. It is the next step after Shark swim lessons and before lifesaving, and swim team.
